Tripp Lite's SMART1500LCDT Line Interactive Tower UPS System offers voltage regulation, surge suppression and long lasting battery support for personal computers, network workstations, home entertainment systems and media centers. Internal UPS circuits support entry level PCs or individual VCR/DVR components during power failures. Prevents data loss, viewing interruptions, lost recordings and loss of component programming. Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR) circuits continuously regulate brownouts and overvoltage's from 92V to 150V back to usable levels, all while maintaining a full battery charge. Offers complete power protection in an attractive all black cabinet design. Includes 10 built in outlets, 5 with full battery backup and surge suppression for vital system components and another 5 with surge suppression only for accessories not requiring battery support. Tripp - Lite: the PowerAlert software sold me...

Most UPS products within this price range offer similar features. However, what sold me was Tripp-Lite's PowerAlert software. My setup requires that I be able to "inform" other computers on my home network of critical UPS events. Tripp-Lite's software makes this possible by allowing the execution of scripts associated with various types of UPS events. This capability alone makes this unit worth the price of admission.

Great Hardware, Terrible Software

The battery on this is a workhorse. It will keep my computer (cpu, monitor, external drives, speakers) running for 90 minutes! If I power down everything but the CPU (which I do only for testing) I can get over two hours! It runs quiet and cool. The LCD display is a little bright, but not a major concern. Besides, having a front display to tell me whatever I wanted to know about the battery is really helpful. I got this to replace a major brand competitor, and this has a better form factor, is quieter, and seems to be a better quality build than my last one.

As much as I like the UPS, the Tripp Lite software is absolutely terrible. First, no CD is included; you must download the software. Second, it runs entirely on the Java platform, which is slow. Finally, and this might be a little important, most of the time it does NOT see my battery! It will work upon first install, but then says no battery is detected. A support incident with Tripp Lite led me through removing and reinstalling, but that only caused it to connect once... again. Then nothing.

I still hold out hope that I will be able to resolve my software issue. All in all, though, if you can live without the software and just need a reliable power backup... look no further.

The software is problematic

I bought this UPS because I wanted an intelligent model that can shut down my computers and hard drives automatically in case of a power failure. In order to do that, you would have to install the software Tripp Lite provides on their site, and connect the UPS to your computer with the USB cable. The problem is that the software doesn't work properly. I made sure I set up the settings properly, but the UPS would shut down my computer or external hard drive without warning, and I'd have no idea what triggered it. I checked my power settings in the OS and double-checked the PowerAlert software settings, and I couldn't fix the problem.

So after spending too much time trying to fix the problem, I uninstalled PowerAlert and now I'm using Tripp Lite as just a "dumb" UPS, which isn't what I bought it for.
