good ol' APC UPS, but with not-so-good software
By Omar Siddique
This rack-mount SmartUPS will feel very familiar to anybody who has used the venerable SmartUPS product line, which has a deserved reputation for durable, enterprise-grade power protection. Unfortunately, the bundled Powerchute software has not improved with age, and in the SMT series, APC has made it harder to use 3rd-party software like apcupsd. (Note the software is only for monitoring and management, so its usage is "optional" as far as power protection goes)
Unlike my older SmartUPS units, this one has a small LCD panel with interactive menus (eg, for self-test settings) and some data display (load, runtime, battery age, etc). The input power cord connects to a normal 5-15 socket (normal US wall-power socket). In the Smart-UPS series, you can't go much bigger than this without needing to upgrading to at least a 5-20 socket and 20A circuit (less common). There's both USB and RS-232 console connectors, but no ethernet. There's a "green mode" that runs at a higher efficiency level.
When the unit is plugged in (whether powered on or off), it makes a low, steady buzz. The APC web site claims the noise level is 46 dBa at one meter. By comparison, my BackUPS-RS 1500 (similar VA rating, smaller consumer model) is notably quieter in standby. The fan in this SmartUPS also runs at a low speed even with no loads connected to the UPS. The minor noise level wouldn't be noteworthy if installed in a server rack, but the pitch is definitely audible in a quieter setting like an office.
The unit is more dense than most 2U gear, so it should be installed at the bottom, if you're racking it. I'm using this one in my home office, so it sits on the ground instead of in a rack; APC claims the unit weights 63 lbs, but it seems much heavier if you're working on it on the ground.
If you've used an APC rackmount UPS before, nothing about the included rack hardware will surprise you, except that the rackmount "ears" that go in the front of the rack are pre-attached. They are machine-tightened, so I had to find an extra-leverage (long) screwdriver to remove them.
As for software... APC's "Powerchute Business Edition" is a mess. Poorly documented, with 3 separate installations required, it didn't work "out of the box" for this proficient IT specialist on a mainstream platform like Windows 7 64-bit. Indeed, Powerchute Business Edition embodies what I consider the worst of "old" generation of enterprise application design. Cumbersome apps with non-intuitive UIs, unhelpful "wizards" that don't actually do setup or give diagnostic info, no power-user configuration mode (ie, show me all options and settings and let me fix what's not working), meaningless error messages ("couldn't connect"... to what? why not? what should I do?).
Indeed, I ended up with software installed that didn't seem to do anything, didn't seem to be able to communicate with the "agent", but there had been no setup errors or prompts to start the agent, no startup menu item for the agent. It didn't even seem to keep state, prompting for passwords when it was already running. And why not make the "console" app part of the "server" app? And why not make "setup" install everything needed and make it actually work? Did anybody at APC actually *try* installing their software with their product?
And the docs?? The start-up guide on the DVD isn't particularly illustrative either, with no step-by-step setup guide, or usage guidelines. And that's apart from the antiquated "Windows Help format" (cmon APC, in this decade all documentation begs for the Web treatment; hypertext or even PDF is the way to do manuals, not "Windows Help"), there was no step-by-step guide.
Yes, I could dig through the install, look for log files, read forums, talk to APC customer support, etc, but seriously, getting a single UPS set up with a single host via a USB connection on a current mainstream OS, for a software product this "mature" should not be hard! (powerchute has been around since at least the late 1990s)
By contrast, the Powerchute Personal Edition setup goes much more easily, its streamlined but simplistic UI would have been an improvement over Powerchute Business Edition's sloppy design. Unfortunately "Personal Edition" doesn't support this SmartUPS (I tried).
So Powerchute has always been ugly, but I could pay it less heed in the past, since I would instead run popular opensource "apcupsd", which did most of the same things, and is flexible, lightweight, and cross-platform. Unfortunately, with this SmartUPS series, APC has created a new, proprietary communications protocol called Microlink and refused to release the specifications, making it so apcupsd can't support this model over RS-232 (except apparently in a limited mode over USB, which I have not yet verified). Moving to proprietary protocols today for something that isn't a cost-added feature seems a ludicrous and ill-considered decision on APC's part.
I've run many APC SmartUPS units over the years as part of managing small datacenters, and have owned several of their consumer-grade products. They have been almost uniformly reliable (I've had a couple of units die of old age), but I've had batteries last as little as 2.5 years (but as long as 5 years). This one I have only lightly loaded (to maximize runtime). So far, so good with this unit, but I'll update if I encounter problems.
APC makes good UPS gear. So I only mark this one down a star for the junk they pass off as management software, but seriously the software folks should be fired. The hardware itself is recommended.

The Best UPS our company has ever owned.
By R. Garth
I am an Electronic Engineer and also do server system installs for small businesses.
First let me dispel certain myths that go around about APC UPS products.
APC sells the Low cost "Backup Pro UPS" series and the High End "Smart UPS" line. People tend to take an experience they have had with the Backup Pro series and then use it in reviews about a Smart UPS. These are two totally different designs; the Backup series is literally a relay switching from battery power to line voltage with a minimum of extra filtering so as to keep costs down for home consumers while the Smart UPS literally has a built in power analyzing computer that is always analyzing the incoming power and adjusting it to keep it at a constant voltage while also filtering it to keep the output voltage extremely clean.
The SMT 1500RM2U is a pure sine wave Smart UPS with a voltage output that is cleaner than any voltage you will get from your utility company, we have checked this with our oscilloscopes at work and believe me the voltage output is perfectly clean and the UPS will keep a rock steady output to all devices connected to it with protection from spikes and dips happening even in a fraction of a microsecond.
Years ago I saw a Smart UPS take the surge from a direct lightning strike on the utility pole outside the server room and the APC blew its innards to pieces but the equipment connected to it was unplugged and turned out to be fine, so I can vouch for the fact that these UPS protection circuits are built like Tanks.
You will hear a lot of comments about the unit being heavy! Of course it's heavy it has two huge 12V 18Amp/hour batteries that weigh about 20lbs each. That's almost half the weight of the UPS tied up in batteries. This is not something that can be improved with technology, the batteries are what make a good UPS really heavy, and if your UPS is really light you have a low power dud.
Some really cool features of the SMT1500 that I like are:
1) A very intelligent display panel. It gives me exact amount of time the unit can run for on battery power given the load its supporting, the exact load that is connected along with the incoming power and outgoing power information, volts and Frequency. It monitors battery health and lets you know how the Battery capacity is deteriating over time and when it will need replacement. It also keeps track by Date when the Battery was installed. It has self diagnostics that runs on intervals to keep the battery capacity meter accurate and a really nice Plug setup feature (see below) plus adjustable voltage trip points along with a slew of other menu options.
2) I can assign different plugs on the rear of the UPS to have different priority for reserve power. In the event of a blackout I can tell the SMT1500RM to shed power to the Printers within 30 seconds then shutdown the PC Monitor power 5 minutes later and keep the Server systems running until the battery is almost depleted at which time APC PC software will gracefully shutdown all the PC's connected. With this feature I can extend the length of time that the servers will be running to the maximum while letting the clients do a graceful shutdown of whatever they are working on.
3) Extra battery support on the rear panel. Want more runtime during an outage, just plug in extra batteries and the SMT1500RM will handle charging them and using them to extend your power and it will let you know on the display how much extra time you have gained.
4) Setting of transfer points from main power to Battery. I love the fact that I can set in the Menu's to switch to batteries for voltage point I select. For example on my unit if the voltage goes below 108V or over 127 Volts, it switches to Batteries while any fluctuations in-between those values and my set target voltage of say 115V is kept constant by the UPS's internal step up, step down system.. That way I can tailor it to suit the sensitivity of the equipment I have connected, this is a really useful feature if you also have backup generators that may produce voltage slightly outside normal specifications. It also has a menu item to set delays before it will return to Main power, that way if you're having a lot of little dips in power it will remain on Backup power until the voltage stabilizes.
5) It's not Cycle dependent so this unit works well on both 50Hz used in most south American and Caribbean countries or 60Hz used in the USA and Canada. It also has an expansion port that can be used with add on card to remotely boot the computer systems and talk to the UPS even if the PC system is off!
Overall an excellent value for the money, if I have any criticisms it would be that the front panel clips are not as sturdy as I would like and I also wish the power cord was removable, that makes a huge difference when you need to swap out a unit for cleaning and maintenance.
If you're in the Market for a UPS for a small or large business the SMT1500RM is an excellent choice.

Highly serviceable UPS
By Citizen John
I've used UPS units from American Power Conversion (APC) for years without issue. This is my first experience with a Smart-UPS. I didn't get the 3-yr extended warranty.
Smart-UPS is a brand. It's APC's business-level UPS series that can be run on a network to shut down connected computers safely and control and report on the power side of the network environment. It simulates utility power to the network to give a pure sine wave output. It's supposed to reduce utility costs and generate less overall heat in the server room.
The unit is real heavy (66 lbs. shipping) as it has lead-acid batteries. It almost needs to be rack mounted as intended. It's only 3.5 inches high but 19.3" depth and 17" width.
This SMT1500 has one "Smart Slot" for the Smart Slot card. The older units had two Smart Slots but APC sells expansion modules for about 100 or less for additional Smart Slots. Like all the Smart-UPS models, this comes with APC's PowerChute software. While the software is highly functional, it presents the significant hurdle to using this UPS on a network.
When I installed the SMT1500, I upgraded the firmware and installed the PowerChute Business Edition 5 Node - v9.1. It works with Microsoft operating systems and also VMware ESX, Red Hat and SUSE Linux. People should be aware that 9.1 support is only available in English although the interface has a lot of languages. The support language could be a critical for some.
Documentation: I recommend before buying to simply go to the APC site and download the operating manual (it's pdf). Being a UPS, there are only a handful of visible or audible issues that can occur; therefore the section on troubleshooting is only one and a half pages. The weakest point of the documentation I think is regarding the Controllable Outlet Groups. Be prepared to call Support.
All in all, this is a great unit. It has a lot of network management capability and reporting. The unit can be managed on the interface or remotely. It can be cold started on battery power alone. It has resettable circuit breakers. I recommend it.
