Works good and protects my stuff, Insurance for that deadly lightning

I have not noticed the noise like other reviewers have. It has to do with placement, maybe. Mine sits at my feet and the fan would point away from me, but I don't ever hear it. The battery lasts a good amount of time for me, especially compared to a 1000 VA.
I bought this to protect my Mac Pro. I am glad I did. I had a storm last year that crippled about $3000 worth of equipment when a bolt of lightning struck very close. My Mac Pro survived hooked up to this. This UPS seems to have helped with the surge a lot compared to some others. I had an expensive APC Smart-UPS which let through a damaging jolt in the room next door (Server died hard and UPS died). I also had a Tripp-Lite Smart1000LCD which got toasted and let through a surge. This UPS may not have been perfect, as it seems that a USB port on my monitor failed (the LCD screen works), but it fared the best of all of my surge protectors and UPSes.
So overall, if you get hit by lightning, nothing is safe, even with an expensive UPS. Tripp-Lite sent me replacement UPSes, so having (both) a product warranty and an equipment warranty is good insurance. It may take a while to get service, but they are helpful. So whatever brand you buy, get a good UPS with a good warranty and hope for the best. They will ask you to draw a diagram of what failed during the storm, so make sure you have everything plugged in, including phones and network cables.
Update: Dec. 2012. I still have this UPS, now being used for my laptop, monitor, a small PC, a wireless access point, and a network switch. So far, so good. I have noticed the bright blue lights at night, but mine has a quiet fan that I don't notice. I wanted to mainly update everyone and say that I had a second lightning storm after the first one, and this one let through part of the surge. I think I had about $700 or $800 in damage, which Tripp-Lite sent me for replacement of the fried equipment. They also sent me a new UPS, as I had to send in the failed one into them for the equipment warranty. So keep your receipts and be sure everything is plugged into the UPS. Watch your network cabling. Tripp-Lite will send you replacement units if they fail, and sometimes they need the old one for testing for a warranty claim. There is not a single unit on the market that is 100% safe during a direct lightning strike, so make sure you have a backup. I have heard that sometimes they will provide money for a hard disk data recovery, but don't count on it.

Avoid at all costs!!!

I have a Tripp Lite Smart1200LCD UPS that has been used gently and sparingly (never went through a single power outage or surge) over the last 3 1/2 years and is now completely dead. I contacted Tripp Lite and they said it must be a battery issue as they tend to go bad over time. I ran some tests on the unit and the battery is actually working fine; the UPS unit itself went bad. When I contacted Tripp Lite again to inform them as much and asked if a $200 UPS was only supposed to last 4 years or less, I never even got a reply. This product is garbage and Tripp Lite is an absolute joke of a company.
