Sturdy and Reliable

I was getting frequent 5-10 second brown outs in my community and it was causing havoc with my mirrored RAID disk array when my PC would loose power; would take 3 hours to rebuild and verify data integrity. My PC has a newer Active PFC power supply and would not work with my older UPS which did not output a pure sine wave. I also usually have one or two other dedicated servers I use for software development.
Did some research and settled on this APC UPS. The UPS has worked flawlessly. Keeping all my expensive servers online during the brown outs and saving a ton of time from the RAID verify/rebuilds that I was suffering from.
This unit comes out of the box setup as a rack mountable UPS, but the conversion to stand-up tower mode is very easy to do. Just be aware that this thing is REAL heavy and requires you to flip it around a bit to do the conversion. I ended up with a couple of bruises from resting the unit on my legs. No special power outlets are required. This unit uses the normal household plugs.
I have a constant 300-400 watt power requirement with my main PC on; 1200 watt power supply, 4 hard disks, ATI 5800 series graphics card. If I turn on my other two servers I have a 800 watt drain with all 3 computers on. UPS reports 40 minutes of stand-by power if I just use my main PC. It reports 22 minutes of standy-by power if I have all 3 computers running. The front panel LCD display reports a lot of information including current watt usage, stand-by power time, etc...

The manual is laughable. I got more documentation when I purchased a twenty nine dollar toaster.

Seems very temperamental. Has been running for 3 days now but with problems.

and "knowledge bases " are not so helpful.
Case in point: It was having a great deal of difficulty with a condition it diagnosed as "distorted power". An explanation of what
it considers as distorted is non existent and the help logic is circular. If you look at the manual either that came with it or the pdf
it says to check the knowledge base and the knowledge base says to check the manual. Would be funny if it was not happening to me.
I emailed support and got a passive aggressive reply from someone that did not seem to know anything about the unit. The output voltage tracks the input voltage. i.e. if input is 123.5 V the output is 123.5 V. There is a place in the software to select output. When I asked how to select fixed output voltage the reply was "send us a screenshot so we can understand your issue"
I finally found a support number to call and the answer seems to be 1. Set the units sensitivity to the very lowest. ( to cure distorted power ) 2. Voltage is not selectable but "floats" within tolerance ( to set a fixed output ) 3. There are two settings for input power quality on two widely separated menus on the UPC itself. 4. Seems the Powerchute software controls some but not all functions on the unit. ( as cure for distorted input) But I was not able to get a clear answer as to what menus controls what and how these menus / controls interact and what it means for output quality.
I am thinking that with the lousy manual, the lack luster email support, and the pretty much OK phone support we will be looking at other makes for our next UPS and not buying online but going to see it so we can look at the manuals ahead of time. Seems a shame it just might be a good product but we have to play "bet the server" to find out.

very quite

The unit is very quite compared to my 12year old SmartUps 1400 which is a bit noisy when supplying power. The battery in the 1400 died and I elected to upgrade. After reading the reviews on APC products similar to the 1400 I decided to go with the SMX750 because of the continuous noise comments.
