Risky Choice For Newer PCs

When I called APC tech support to find out why my new BX1000G would not power my Dell XPS 9000 in a power outage, the customer rep knew exactly what was wrong. My Dell computer (and many others) needed a pure sine wave input and this APC series of UPS produces a "step approximated sine wave". She even emailed me a company white paper that explained why it was not compatible with many of the newer energy star compliant computers that have "Active Power Factor Correction" power supplies. She recommended that I exchange it for their "smart-ups" model SMT1000 which produces a pure sine wave. This sounded OK until I discovered that the SMT1000 costs almost four times as much as the BX1000G! Google for "apc ups active pfc" to learn much more about this problem. Call APC to find out if your particular PC is compatible before ordering.
My solution was to order another brand, CyberPower, pure sine wave unit from Amazon CyberPower CP1500PFCLCD UPS 1500VA 900W PFC Compatible Pure Sine Wave. It provides 50% more power (1500VA) and costs less than ½ what APC charges for their 1000VA pure sine wave unit. CyberPower also sells a 1000VA pure sine wave unit on Amazon that sells for about the same as this BX1000G APC unit.CyberPower CP1000PFCLCD UPS 1000VA 600W PFC Compatible Pure Sine Wave
I will update this review after I've had a chance to check out the CyberPower unit.
Update, Sep 7, 2011: My CyberPower CP1500PFCLCD arrived today, seven days after I ordered it with Amazon free shipping. It was packed in only the CyberPower box, which is well padded, and came through in good shape. The battery was fully charged when it arrived, so that I was able to check it out with my Dell Studio XPS 9000 immediately. So far it looks like a winner as my computer did not even blink when I pulled the plug on the CyberPower unit. It indicated that it had about one hour of battery run time remaining when I plugged it back in five minutes later. My only gripe is that the power cord is about a foot shorter than the APC unit, but I can live with that a lot better than having my computer crash with every outage as it does with the APC UPS. Also, note that you have to hold the power button in for about three seconds to turn the CyberPower unit on.

Excellent UPS for virtually any use

I live in an area with frequent power outages and power fluctuations, and as a result, a UPS with power spike protection is a necessity on any piece of expensive electronic gear. I've purchased and use all types of UPS ranging from simple $30 UPS to multi-hundred dollars UPS's that will keep network gear running for an extended period of outages.
I've also discovered that cheaper UPS will wreak havoc with whole house generators causing voltage to rubber band up and down. I'm not sure what causes this, but I know that with a generator a cheap UPS is a mistake.
All of that said, this UPS seems to take all the design lessons and features from the APC UPS from the past 15 years and combined it into a very flexible package that works with minimal fuss while providing important information about the the condition of power and the battery in the UPS on the front panel.
Some of the things that made me love this out of the box:
1) The design is such that you'd feel comfortable using it in your living room for your home entertainment system. Its a discrete black with a blue LCD display. It no longer looks like a piece of network equipment!
2) Enough outlets on the back (although you always wish for more)
3) A display that shows input voltage, load, and battery condition at a glance. With a push of the button, you can see voltage frequency, and with a few more pushes of the same button you can see the estimated run time.
4) They finally added an RJ-45 jack (Ethernet) to protect power surges from this source. Previously, they only had phone jacks and cable-TV jacks; both necessary, but missing the point.
5) Its a fact of life that the batteries will have to be replaced at some time in a UPS, however, APC finally got smart and removed the fiddly wires that you had to connect and you simply drop the new battery into place
I installed the UPS on a weather station that I use to collect data for my web site and to update data at Weather Underground in my remote garage, so this unit will not lead a pampered life.
As luck would have it (in a manner of speaking) the power went out at our house for almost 2 hours just after I installed the UPS. It powered a PC, some cameras and sensors easily for the 2 hours and had juice to spare.
The PC and equipment was not affected by the power outage and associated spikes when the power came on, so it has passed my first test. Additionally, it causes none of the voltage bouncing I have seen from poorly designed UPS's, so that was the big 2nd test.
I really like this UPS; as the need arises I definitely will be adding more of these around my place.

I've been using UPS units for years, ever since a bad power surge ruined one of my computers. This unit is quiet, sleek and feature-rich. And this is the first time I installed the accompanying software, which is really easy to program.
The Back-UPS XS has the following plugins:
* 4 electrical plugins that supply battery power if the electricity goes out. One plugin is for a master unit, typically for your computer
* 4 plugins that act as surge protectors, and 2 of these are controlled by the master unit and will shut down connected devices if the master unit goes into hibernation
* Telephone/Network in/out ports
* Co-axial in/out ports
* A data port for connecting your computer via USB for communicating with the software
* A ground screw for connecting additional surge suppression devices
The unit came fully charged. I just had to flip the (swappable) battery pack in the case. Then I plugged everything in, installed the software for my operating system, set the unit to hibernate 5 minutes after loss of electricity, pulled the plug and voila! The unit placed my computer in hibernation after 5 minutes.
You can turn on the power saving function, which configures your UPS to recognize the master device and will then switch off the controlled devices when the master unit goes into hibernation. You can also set the unit sensitivity, which controls how often the unit switches to battery power. Choose from low sensitivity when input voltage is extremely low or high (not recommended for computers); the medium sensitivity wherein the UPS frequently switches the battery power; or high sensitivity when the connected equipment is sensitive to voltage fluctuations.
This unit is much better than what I've owned before. It has a digital display showing if you're in power-saving mode (which you can choose), your load capacity, the battery charge, events that have occurred, when the Back-UPS is compensating for low input voltage, system faults, when you're on battery, when the battery's low or needs to be replaced, etc. It even has a light in the back to tell you if the wiring in your building is faulty. You can program the unit using either the buttons on the control panel or through the software. And the software will tell you exactly how much energy you're using, among other things.
The Back-UPS 1000X comes with a 3-year warranty, takes a maximum load of 600W, typically recharges in 16 minutes, and the battery will last 3 to 6 years.
My life before this unit in the event of a power outage: wake up at 4 a.m. to the UPS alarm, go to my computer to shut it off and suffer with the shrill beeps as Windows downloads numerous updates before it shuts down, and then shut the unit off to stop that irritating beeping. Now I don't have to do anything, and I can mute the beeps any time or for all time. I can even shut off the illumination of the LED panel to save energy. These folks at Schneider Electric thought of everything.
This is one sweet unit. Highly recommended.
