By John Laur
I have one of these and it did its job during a power outage yesterday. This UPS is cheap and works perfectly fine but beware the pitfalls of stepped square wave UPS's. During yesterday's particular outage, this unit kicked on to protect a computer system. The system shut down fine but the power adapter for the USB hard drive that was plugged into the UPS overheated trying to operate on the stepped square wave power and failed destroying the USB enclosure and drive in the process.
The important thing here is that this failure was NOT the fault of the UPS. It did exactly what it was supposed to do; however if you are protecting valuable data or critical infrastructure with one of these just remember you can step up to the category of true sine wave UPS's for only about $100. The price difference is well worth it!

By Dave
After about 8 months my unit failed, I have been ignored twice via e-mails to Cyberpower, and today was just hung-up on twice after tying to reach tech support and warranty departments. The only person I spoke to was during the call for warranty work, and that was an operator to switch me to the department after being on hold for 1-2 minutes, click- goodbye.
The second call to tech support via the phone keypad was disconnected after a message to contact via e-mail.
Beware they do not want to talk to you once you have purchased the item. go with any other UPS provider!

By P. Harrott
I've used CyberPower UPS's previously and was satisfied. In fact, I had this same model for three years before it wore out.
I immediately ordered a replacement and was sadly disappointed when the one delivered was defective. It issued an overload alarm even when nothing was plugged into it.
I believe that my previous models were manufactured in the USA but the new model was made in China.

By B. BILLINGS
Just know going in - if your equipment gets fried, they won't pay you a dime. They will blame it on anything from faulty building wiring to bad grounding and deny your claim. Why don't they just print '$500,000,000,000 WARRANTY' on the box - if they don't intend to stand behind their product? I had one computer system that was wireless and it's only link to electricity was through an APC battery. Lightning struck and it died and started to smell burnt. I sent in the claim and the unit & got what looks like their standard protocol - sorry, no replacement. The system was only worth $200 which is far less than our company spends annually on batteries. I won't use APC again.

By Michael Sackett
I received my new UPS yesterday, plugged it in, turned it on and connected it with the USB cable. Although the Toolbar icon showed (100%), I allowed it to charge for 14 hours. It's beautiful!
There is more than just surge and spike protection and battery backup. Unlike others in its class, the Back-UPS RS 800 has Boost and Trim, Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR). This gives over-voltage and brownout protection.
Caveat for Apple Mac users: Don't load the APC furnished PowerChute software. OS X 10.4, Tiger and OS X 10.5, Leopard recognize an APC UPS. Just connect them with the furnished USB cable. Then: Systems Preferences > Energy Saver > UPS > UPS and select one of three shutdown modes and adjust the shutdown parameter
I selected "Shutdown the computer when it has been on UPS power for:" and set 5 minutes. When I pulled the plug to simulate power failure, the Toolbar icon showed: 48 minutes of runtime and turned off my iMac in about five minutes. The other shutdown choices are "Time left on UPS power" and "UPS power level".
If you have questions about your individual application, visit the APC website and make use of their selection tool and complete specifications. I did and I'm more than happy with my choice.

By Dan McKinnon
This APC unit is built rock-solid and does exactly what we need it for: keep our machines up and running when the power goes out. With 4 battery backup ports (plus 3 surge only outlets) and very quiet operation, this is a must have accessory for anyone that uses their computer on a daily basis. Upon setting up this unit we lost power only days after plugging this in and we were able to continue our work and save our precious data before disaster struck. With the very likely possibility that an electrical surge can happen at any moment and cause a $15 surge protector to allow this deathblow through without the slightest resistance, you would be ill-advised to not have one of these protecting your investment(s)!!

This unit gives you sine wave output with no frills at an attractive price.
Be aware of the limitations of this new model at its price point. This is not a desktop product, so don't expect extras like ethernet or coax surge protection. It is less capable than some other APC UPSs with equivalent VA ratings; for example, the SMC1000 is rated for 600 watts, vs. 700 for the SMT1000. It has a 2-year warranty, rather than the 3 year warranty carried by most recent APC products.
Most importantly, this unit uses the new "Microlink" protocol, and does not have an expansion slot for adding a UPSLink interface. This means it will never be possible to fully interact with this unit using open source software, such as NUT or apcupsd; you can only get the most basic information out of it, such as line power up or down. Neither NUT nor apcupsd will be able to query it for load, output voltage, recent events, or many other things.
If these limitations don't concern you, it's a good value, and is the lowest-priced APC UPS with sine wave output. It's perfect for protecting the availability of a small server.
I noted that another reviewer complained of noise, but mine is nearly silent except when operating on backup power.

The "SMC" line differers from APC's "SMT" line mainly in that you can't plug in their $220 Network Management Card. If you will need that level of sophistication, by all means look at the APC Smart-UPS SMT1500 1500VA 120V LCD UPS System instead.
(Note that APC's older "SC" line that the "SMC" line has now replaced delivered an inferior type of power that only vaguely approximated, through a series of stair-steps, the smooth curves of normal power. The new SMCs deliver the same smooth sine-wave power as the SMTs, erasing the critical difference between the two.)
I've been buying APC sine-wave UPSes for around a decade now and have been very happy. They are smart looking and work well.

By Jeffrey Brown
This is a good UPS from a size, capacity, and functionality standpoint, and if you're going to put it in a typical semi-noisy office environment or a server closet, then it's great. But if you have a very quiet office, you'll hear a constant low buzz from the unit. I don't mean the inverter buzz while it's on battery (that's expected) or the buzz when it's recharging after an outage (also expected). But a constant low buzz while it's just sitting there stable. It's on the floor about 5 ft away from my ears, and it's annoying. Maybe I'll get used to it after a while and my ears will notch out the noise, but after a week of listening to it, I'm kinda disappointed. EDIT: Either I'm getting used to it or it's quieting down. It's noisiest when the line voltage is below 120 and the unit is boosting it. Acceptable!

By Brent Davingman
Pros: Works with Macintosh Leopard's Energy System Preferences. 12 outlets and 4 are spaced for AC adapters, nothing else like it for this price!
Cons: No software for Macintosh so can't monitor UPS for voltage drops. Likewise, I can see the power level (which seems to be plenty for my 19" CRT, Dual G4, speakers, wireless access point, USB hub, speakers, wireless mouse, DSL modem, and cordless phone) but I don't know how much time I have left or other "niceties" that additional software would likely bring.

By jimmy
After six months of use, including several brief power disruptions and three lengthy blackouts, the Tripp Lite AVR900U has proven itself an effective piece of hardware. For example, two months ago a windstorm blew down a tree that, in turn, toppled onto a power line, causing an extensive power outage. The Tripp Lite UPS kicked in as soon as the power failed. It sounded an alarm and kept the computer going steadily through some brief brown-outs and into the final blackout. I had plenty of time to shut down the computer normally. Similarly, when lighting knocked out power to my area, the UPS switched on instantaneously, again allowing me to shut down the computer almost at leisure.
But then there's the software. I downloaded Tripp Lite PowerAlert 12.04.0055--the latest version. At first, PowerAlert worked very well. Then, however, I updated my Java Standard Edition software to Version 7 Update 21. Now PowerAlert does not work at all. It takes far longer to load and none of its features is functional. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling it--no effect. I assumed the Java update caused the problem, but the UPS manufacturer says there are no known incompatibilities. Be that as it may, I finally gave up on the software and uninstalled it for good.

By James G. Magee
Most compact UPSes don't have a user replaceable battery. Since the batteries typically only last 3 years it's a good idea to find a ups where you can change out the battery.
This one is simple and small. Just what I needed.
The one grip is that I was not easy for me to programmatically change the settings to disable the alarm beeping. I have a mac (which makes basic set up dead easy with this ups) but they don't have a downloadable program for the mac. Anyways you can always open and remove the alarm speaker.

By D. Fruth
We bought 3 of these for two different locations. 100% of them have failed with the same problem. If the power goes out even for a few seconds the unit shuts down completely taking the servers along with it. The problem is that it appears to be doing it's job but when it really matters you find out otherwise. Tripp Lite has been good to replace them but it can't restore my faith in their power protection products. Also of note the batteries in the Tripp Lite units are half the size of those in APC products with the same rating.

By Mark D. Ferdinands
I purchsed 2 of the 1500 VA 120V "Smartpro" UPSes from Tripp Lite via their web site. Both units failed within 3-4 months during moderate use in a home theater/ audio setup. The company (Tripp Lite) was very un-cooperative in making an adjustment - I argued both units were defective. They disagreed. One issue with the Tripp Lite units is they are shipped with the batteries already hooked up - like everything else they are made in China and most sit on the shelf for a long time before being sold. When they go into service the batteries are already depleted and beyond recharge.
Ultimately I threw both Tripp Lite units in the trash and replaced them with APC 1300 VA UPS systems - which actually perform better and were less money to start with - if only I would have known. Too bad I wasted over $500 on Tripp-Lite products. Avoid this company and its bad products !!!!!!

By Jason H. Reskin
I have been a long-time (15+ years) APC fan and had never tried anything other than APC (and never had problems with any APC product). How hard could it be, APC had it down! Well this Tripp-lite product sucked. From the day I bought it the display would never show a full charge. I called the "technical support" about the erroneous reading and they advised that it is "normal" and that the battery is actually fully charged. Then the first time I had a power outage the unit only lasted about half as long as it should have given the 1500VA capasity and a load of about 400 watts. I phoned them again and they give me some crap about how the know the wattage and how it is difficult to estimate run time. I told them I had a lemon and I wanted another, they declined. Fast forward a few months the unit starts to power off in the middle of the day (line voltage was fine). That is going to start costing me more money in damaging OS files. For the same money you can get the BR1500 from APC which is expandable using the BR24BP to quadrupal the runtime for another $150 or less. I will never stray from APC again.
